GMBC and Local/State-wide Bicycle Advocacy
  |
During 1999 ten club members started a focus-group
to examine ways on how to inform motorists about the rights of
bicyclists in Vermont, and at the same time, inform bicyclists that
many of the state's traffic laws apply to them too. It became
clear that the club did not have the connections (nor the resources)
necessary to make a significant difference, and as a result, several
members became aware of and active with the Montpelier-based
Vermont Bicycle
& Pedestrian Coalition (a state-wide advocacy group for bicycles
and pedestrians). VT Bike/Ped did have the connections and
resources (to a certain extent) to lobby law-makers, and that it was
better to join forces rather than trying to go it alone.
Working together, several GMBC members and Bike/Ped
members successfully petitioned law-makers to have the
Vermont
Drivers' Manual revamped to include references to bicycles.
This was a big win. Around the same time a proposal was
written for a
Vermont Share the Road Guide in Vermont, but the timing was
not right. However, through the years here have been other
victories.
To show the club's support of VT Bike/Ped's mission, at the annual
GMBC club meeting in 2002 it was proposed that GMBC become a "member club"
of the coalition. This designation required that monetary
donations be made from the club to the coalition. The proposal
passed unanimously, and since then, GMBC has proudly donated $2 of
each of memberships to the coalition. |

A few later the club developed ties with
Burlington-based
Local Motion. This is a Chittenden county based advocacy
group that has been very successful in transforming Burlington and
surrounding communities into more bike-friendly areas. It is
through their efforts that Burlington has been designated as a
biking destination by various publications. |
Over time GMBC, Vermont Bike/Ped, and Local Motion have all helped each
other to help make our Vermont roads safer. The club greatly
encourages its members and non-members to join these two advocacy groups.
We all benefit from their successes.
In addition to all of this, GMBC has presence at many Chittenden
county-based meetings on roadways and traffic issues through the club's
advocacy chair, Jim Brophy. He makes a point to announce meetings and
to recap important points on the club's email list.
