From
Dick Sears:
I Follow Browns Trace to Lee River Rd to Rt#15, and stay on 15 for a good chunk
of my commute. It's direct, traffic is not moving all that fast during commuter
times and the shoulder is pretty good, so it's tolerable.
At any rate, once you've gone through the light at the 128 intersection,
continue on 15 through the light at the small shopping center on the right. As
you go up the gradual hill, you'll be approaching the light at Essex Way, the
road that goes left
to the Inn at Essex.
When you're almost to the Saybrook condos on the left (Saybrook Rd), start
looking for an opportunity to cross the road so you can get to the bike path
that cuts in diagonally left, just past Saybrook Rd. Follow that bike path. When
it comes close to Essex Way, you'll see a quick curb cut - look for traffic from
both directions, then cross the road there and keep going south on Essex Way.
Cross 189, pass the entrance to the golf course on your right, then get on the
bike path shortly after that on the right and follow it down through the woods
until it ends in a neighborhood.
Go straight out onto Countryside Dr (directly opposite) and follow it til it
ends. Go right on Brickyard Rd. Take the second left, onto Densmore Dr. Go til
it ends on 15. Left on 15, then immediate right on Educational Dr. Follow that
all the way through Essex High School onto Grove St/Old Colchester Rd. Go right,
and to it ends on 2A. Left on 2A, then right on Pinecrest. Follow Pinecrest til
it ends on Susie Wilson Rd at a stoplight.
Left at the light, across the entrance to the old Ames shopping center, and
up on the sidewalk. Follow the sidewalk around the corner; when it ends take a
right into Ft Ethan Allen on Dalton Dr (be sure to look left for cars). Bear
right at the first fork, follow Ethan Allen Ave to the end. Right on Barnes Ave.
Left on Hegeman Ave. At the end, keep going on the sidewalk until it comes out
on Rt#15 again. Go right on the sidewalk, cross the entrance to Camp Johnson,
follow the sidewalk to Dunkin Donuts.
Go right, through their parking lot, come out on Johnson Ave, and go left.
After about 100ft, go right through a gate onto a beat-up old paved road (not
accessible to cars). At the end before the bushes, go left over a mound of
gravel, which puts you in a St Mike's parking lot. Go to the end, then take a
right onto the main St Mike's drag, then take another right after the tennis
courts.
Follow that road around til it ends in a cul-de-sac at the dorms. Get on the
sidewalk using the wheelchair access near the dumpster, then go around to the
right of the last dorm across the grass (if you had bunnyhopped up on the
sidewalk over the curb, you'd be going straight). Follow the bushes around a
corner to the right (keep the sand volleyball court to your left), and you will
find a dirt path that leads tightly into a short lane between two chainlink
fences.
Follow that out to the pavement in a Winooski neighborhood, Florida Ave. Go
right on Gail St, left on Bernard St, right on LaFountain, and down the hill
under I-89. Take the second right, Dion St, and ride up the hill til it ends in
a cul-de-sac. Wheelie or hop up the curb straight up on to a very short paved
path that leads to the Winooski High School playing fields.
Follow the dirt path to the left til it ends on the running track, then ride on
the track until the dirt path starts again on the other end, and ride to the
pavement. Follow that around the far right end of the school (slow around the
corner - it's kind of a maintenance access, so wave nicely to the janitors and
groundskeepers - they don't seem to mind me going through). Keep following the
pavement and you'll find yourself crossing the parking lot to the exit, where
you can take a left or right onto Main St (Rt#7).
