Enhancements to Safe Passing Bill

A proposal to enhance the Safe Passing bill has been drafted by volunteer bicycle advocate Bruce Cunningham.  GMBC fully supports his efforts and urges you to do the same, too!

It will be introduced in January, 2012, and asks for more measures to make cycling safer.  It will require drivers to pass with a minimum of 3 feet of clearance when they are traveling up to 30 mph.  It will require that they give an extra foot of clearance for each additional 10 mph faster that they are traveling (i.e., 4 feet for 40 mph, 5 feet for 50 mph, etc).  It will also require  drivers to  pass cyclists (and other vulnerable users) completely before making a right turn (avoiding right hook crashes) and will prohibit drivers from passing a cyclist if there is a vehicle in the oncoming lane  law.

This is an important step to further improve safety on Vermont roads, so please urge your representative(s) to support this by co-sponsoring it.  The   more co-sponsors means the better chance this bill has to make it into law.

Annual Club Potluck & Meeting

This annual event will take place on Sunday, Nov 6th at  the Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Williston..  Let's start gathering around 5pm and have dinner and mingling time run from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.  The meeting will begin promptly at 6:30pm.

GMBC will provide drinks, plates, utensils, and napkins.  Please bring a dish or dessert, fruit, etc.  If you make a dish that is gluten-free, let Kevin or Larry know when you arrive so they can put a card indicating this next to it.

During the meeting you will hear brief updates from Local Motion and Vermont Bike/Ped, and reports from GMBC committee chairs.  Officers will be elected for 2012 and then time trial awards will be handed out.  Afterward the floor will be open for general discussion.  Contact Kevin to learn more about this event, to discuss a topic on your mind, or if you'd like to get involved with helping out next year!
