Ride Classifications

  • E: Easy, up to 20 miles, average under 10 mph, not necessarily flat, but close
  • EM: Average Riders, up to 35 miles, average under 12 mph, some hills
  • M: Experienced Riders, average 16 mph or less, expect varied terrain with hills
  • S: Strong Riders, no limits, any terrain possible including mountainous

Notes:

  • All GMBC rides are free and open to the public.  Helmets are required.  All of our official rides have two leaders: one to lead and a co-leader to sweep.  Please contact the leaders for specific info. on the ride.  We encourage riders to try to carpool to starting points which are far from their homes.

Double Ferry 50mi (M/S)   87mi (S) Starting from Burlington and heading down to Charlotte on a combination of roads and bike paths. Riders will take the Charlotte Ferry to Essex, NY. The hilly terrain on the New York side brings beautiful views of the lake, followed by a return trip on either the Burlington or Grand Isle Ferry. Nice riding in northwestern Vermont near Lake Carmi.  Boh Mileage options go through Morses Line and then Franklin where some can stop for a food break. The shorter ride returns on route 120 and 105 through Sheldon.  The long ride goes up to Richford (with another potential food stop) and returns on 105 through Enosburg Falls.

Waitsfield and Waterfalls 35mi (M)   60mi (M/S)

Enjoy a scenic tour through the countryside of Waitsfield and Warren with a visit to Moss Glen Falls. Turn around at the falls for a 35 mile ride or continue up Middlebury Gap with a stop at Texas Falls before turning around for a 60 mile ride. A stop at the Warren Store is always popular and the general store in Hancock provides an additional respite for those on the long ride.

Rouse’s Point Rouser 60mi (M/S)

One of our flattest rides. The 60-mile loop heads up from Grand Isle over the Rouse’s Point Bridge and down through scenic, low-traffic lakeside roads in New York. The ride can be shortened by turning around at any point before the bridge. Bring money for the ferry from Plattsburgh. Riders can gather at the deck of the Alburg General Store for fresh baked goods.

State Fisheries parking lot slightly north and across the road from the Grand Isle Ferry Lot. Those coming from the Burlington area may consider carpooling from the Colchester Park and Ride at Exit 17 off I-89, UVM or Dorset Park, South Burlington.

35 (E/M) and 50 (M/S) options of hilly terrain on low-traffic roads in New York. There are two potential stops for ice cream. Bring money for the ferry and food stops. The shorter version of this ride skips the big hill out of Willsboro.

The 35 mile (E/M) options rolls from Shelburne through Charlotte to Kingsland Bay and returns.  The 46 mile (M) ride heads towards Vergennes and climbs to Monkton Ridge, returning through Hinesburg. The 65 (M/S) mile ride continues west to Huntington and back.

The 38-mile ride (M) goes through Morrisville, Hyde Park and Johnson with optional stops Morrisville and Johnson.  The 63 mile (S) ride makes a loop to Craftsbury with optional stops in Morrisville, Hardwick and Craftsbury.  Enjoy the low traffic and scenic towns.  Finish with ice cream at the scoop shop in Stowe. 9:15am Stowe Post Office, Stowe John Bertelsen

This hilly ride starts out on scenic Pleasant Valley Road with a rest stop at The Cupboard in Jeffersonville.  A 45 mile (M) option returns via Route 104 and 128, while the 65 mile (S) option heads north to Bakersfield and then to Fairfield, Fletcher and Fairfax before returning though Westford and Essex.

Meandering through Montreal 35mi (E)

This is a reprise of last year’s popular journey north to enjoy some of Montreal's 270 miles of flat bike ways and paths. The ride glides along the canals and shores of Lasalle, possibly biking up Mont Royal before visiting the Old Port area of the city.  The pace will be leisurely.  Bring a lock in case you want to stop at a market or to take in a sight. Route options are 35 (E) and 50 (M/S) miles. Bring your passport or the required customs documents.

Awesome Ausable River Ride 64mi (M/S)

A great, challenging ride in New York State.  Follow the Ausable River from Port Kent to Lake Placid for the 80 mile (S) option or turn around prior to Lake Placid for the 64 mile (M/S) version.  Food stops include Keesville, Ausable Forks and Lake Placid.

Covered Bridges of Franklin and Lamoille County 41mi (E/M)
55mi (M/S)

See as many as ten covered bridges on this ride.  The 41 miles loop (E/M) goes through Eden and Johnson, while the 55 mile ride (M/S) passes more covered bridges in Montgomery Center, returning through Bakersfield.

In Search of Memphre *NEW 75mi (S) Memphre is the legendary sea monster who resides in Lake Memphremagog.  This 75 mile ride (S) can be shortened at any time by turning back.  The terrain is hilly, but the traffic is light and there are some beautiful views of the lake from higher elevations.  A perfect lunch spot is Magog, Quebec and if it’s a warm day, riders can stop for a swim in Georgeville, Quebec.  Bring your passport or the required customs documents.  This ride will be a good warm-up for next week’s century. 9:30am Gardner Park, Newport Bob Ray

Century Day – Three rides, all following the same route for the first 25 miles with a food stop in Bristol.  The Metric Century is 62 miles (M) via Bristol and Vergennes.  The full Century is 100 miles (S) traveling down to the Crown Point Bridge and returning through the Champlain Valley.  Those looking for an extra challenge can do the Double Gap Century which is 113 miles and includes the Middlebury and Appalachian Gaps. 7:30am Dorset Street Park, South Burlington Amy Otten

Ride 50 or 60 (M/S) miles through the rolling hills around Eden with your choice of a long, gradual climb up Route 105 or a shorter, steeper route up to Jay Peak.  Take a break for fresh baked goods in Montgomery.
