Ride Classifications

  • E: Easy, up to 20 miles, average under 10 mph, not necessarily flat, but close
  • EM: Average Riders, up to 35 miles, average under 12 mph, some hills
  • M: Experienced Riders, average 16 mph or less, expect varied terrain with hills
  • S: Strong Riders, no limits, any terrain possible including mountainous

Notes:

  • GMBC tours are free and open to all.  Helmets are required.  All of our official rides have two leaders: one to lead and a co-leader to sweep.  Please contact the leaders for specific info. on the ride.  We encourage riders to try to carpool to starting points which are far from their homes.

Options for riding the gentle rolling hills through Shelburne and Charlotte with the longer ride going through Ferrisburgh.  All rides stop at the Old Brick Store in Charlotte for a tasty treat. Visit up to four covered bridges in Chittenden County.  Co-sponsored by the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition.

A nice spring ramble.  The 35 mile (EM) ride rolls from Shelburne through Charlotte to Kingsland Bay Park and returns.  The 46 mile (M) ride heads towards Vergennes and climbs to Monkton Ridge, returning through Hinesburg.

St. Albans Explorer 35mi (E/M)

Light, rolling hills with beautiful views by the lake.  The 35 mile (E/M) route goes to St. Albans Bay Park and returns, while the 50 mile (M/S) route continues on to Swanton and back.  There is a short dirt section.

Round Church Rambler 35mi (E/M)
50mi (M/S)

This 35 mile ride (E/M) loops around lightly traveled roads in Richmond, Hinesburg and Williston while the 50 mile (M/S) option adds another loop through Charlotte and a return over Irish Hill Road.  On the Rise Bakery in Richmond is always a good choice for a snack.

This rolling hill ride (60 M/S) starts passes through Georgia and Milton before heading to St. Albans Bay for a lunch break and over to Swanton.  The shorter version (40 E/M) turns around after the lunch stop.  This ride has a short stretch along the shore of the Lamoille River and a longer stretch along Lake Champlain. 9:45am Jasper Mine Road,  off Rt 2 heading towards Grand Isle Larry Coletti

Grand Isles Flats and Picnic 26mi (E/M)

A 26 mile (E/M) ride circles Grand Isle via the west and east shores and includes some dirt.  The 50 mile (M) option goes to the Shrine at Isle LaMotte before returning.  Afterwards, meet at Helen’s camp for a picnic on the shore of the Almost Great Lake.  Hot dogs will be provided, but please bring your own beverage and something to share with the group.

Meandres et Beaux Villages 60mi (M/S) A tour of pretty villages – a 60 mile (M/S) ride across the Canadian border.  Bring your passport or the required customs documents.  We’ll stop in Mystic for brunch and pass many farms along the way.  There is some dirt – about 4 miles total - and a couple of hills. 9:15am

One of our flattest rides, the 60 mile (M) loop heads up from Grand Isle over the Rouse’s Point Bridge and down through scenic, low-traffic lakeside roads in New York. The short ride (50 miles – E/M) circles Isle LaMotte and returns on the Vermont side.  8:45am McKee’s Island Pub and Pizza

35 (E/M) and 50 (M/S) options of hilly terrain on low-traffic roads in New York.  There are two potential stops for ice cream.  Bring money for the ferry and food stops. The shorter version of this ride skips the big hill out of Willsboro.

This is a 27 mile E/M ride with a few short hills. Stop at Salisbury Congregational Church for the 35th annual Salisbury Ice Cream Social.

Nice riding in northwestern Vermont near Lake Carmi.  Both mileage options go through Morse's Line and then Franklin where some can stop for a food break.  The shorter ride returns on route 120 and 105 through Sheldon.  The long ride goes up to Richford (with another potential food stop) and returns on 105 through Enosburg Falls.

Double Ferry 50mi (M/S)

Both distances start from Burlington and head down to Charlotte on a combination of roads and bike paths.  Riders will take the Charlotte Ferry to Essex, NY.  The hilly terrain on the New York side brings beautiful views of the lake, followed by a return trip on either the Burlington (short tour) or Grand Isle Ferry (long tour).  Bring money for the ferries. 8:45am King Street Ferry Dock

The short ride travels through scenic, but  hilly areas of Windsor County.  The longer ride adds two more hills through the horse country of Strafford.

Double or Triple Ferry Ride 43mi (E/M)

Co-sponsored by Local Motion, this ride starts with the ferry to Port Kent and heads north to the recreation path through the Old Air Base into Plattsburgh. From Plattsburgh, riders will take the ferry across to Grand Isle and down to South Hero. Riders then have the option of taking the Local Motion ferry to Colchester and the Burlington Bike Path (43 E/M with packed gravel) or following the Champlain Bikeway on Routes 2 and 7 (50 M).  Bring money for the ferries.  The ride will be followed by a picnic at Auer’s Boathouse just off the bike path.  There is room in the fridge there if folks want to bring refreshments before the ride. 8:20am

36 (M), 45 (M/S), and 55 (S) mile options from Cabot through Greensboro and Craftsbury.  All rides stop at the famous Willy’s Store in Greensboro and offer a view of Caspian Lake.  The two longer rides go along the shore of Lake Eligo. This fairly hilly ride is high on scenery and low on traffic. 8:45am Cabot Creamery - Cabot

Take I-89 to Exit 9, Rt 2 East to Marshfield and Left on Rt 215 to Cabot.

A great, challenging ride in New York State.  Follow the Ausable River from Port Kent to Lake Placid for the 80 mile (S) option or turn around prior to Lake Placid for the 64 mile (M/S) version.  Food stops include Keesville, Ausable Forks and Lake Placid.  Bring money for the ferry. 7:10am

This hilly ride will test your climbing abilities, but you will be rewarded with Vermont beauty, wonderful roads, and great descents.  All rides climb through the Barre granite quarries, then up Rte 302 and through Groton State Park, with the short ride (50 miles – M/S) returning via Rte 2, and the longer ride (80 miles- S) looping up through scenic Peacham.  There is very little level ground on this ride, but you'll be left thinking about when you can come back to ride these great roads again. 8:45am Spaulding High School

Three rides, all following the same route for the first 25 miles with a food stop in Bristol.  The Metric Century is 62 miles (M) via Bristol and Vergennes.  The full Century is 100 miles (S) traveling down to the Crown Point Bridge and returning through the Champlain Valley.  Those looking for an extra challenge can do the Double Gap Century which is 113 miles and includes the Middlebury and Appalachian Gaps. 7:30am Dorset Park/C.
